2020 got us stretching, checking and readdressing EVERYTHING.

And just when we think it can’t get any crazier, here comes something else.

But you know what?

We’re HR and we do HaRd things.  

We’re built for this.

Our resilience muscle is strong.

And just like any other muscle we need take care of it, develop it and  work it out.

Here are three things you can do TODAY:

  1. Protect and replenish your energy – schedule time each morning and afternoon for sanity stretches (walk, water, coffee, mindfulness) and do not miss this appointment. You are able to walk for 15 minutes aren’t you?  Too busy?  Really?  We should definitely talk.                                                                                    
  2. Separate the story (drama) from the facts – We do this with investigations all of the time, but how about with ourselves?  What are we telling ourselves about the emails, the never empty inbox, the committees, the awards, the holiday party in a pandemic? What do we personally have to do?  Or what?  Tell the truth.                                                                                                                                      
  3. Decide that “there is no water in the helmet.” –  When I worked at NASA, an astronaut was doing a spacewalk and it turned out that there was water in his helmet.  I’m going to just let that sit for a moment.  NOW THAT IS A CRISIS.

Everyone comes to HR with what they believe are  “911” issues.  But the truth is, you get to decide what is the real priority.  Remember that.
